5 Minute Oscillations of the Sun is a sound installation by Caroline Devine that explores the acoustic and electromagnetic energy of the sun. Sited within a dome structure in Milton Keynes Theatre District, the structure has been chosen for its particular acoustic attributes that allow the Dome to be used as a form of “meta-instrument”. Using the unique acoustic space afforded by the architecture as an element of the composition, the dome itself acts as a giant sounding box and further amplifies and focuses a multi-channel composition that is diffused through a network of speakers towards its roof. During an hourly cycle, the installation alternates every five minutes between two “listening modes” – one acoustic, the other electromagnetic.
5 Minute Oscillations of the Sun is supported by Milton Keynes Gallery and Arts Council England and will run daily throughout June and July 2012.
